新千歳空港
Main international gateway to Hokkaido. Largest airport with most international and domestic flights. Well-connected with car-rental facilities.

国際運転免許証が必要
Foreign visitors must hold a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home-country licence. Obtain the IDP before arriving in Japan — they cannot be issued locally.
左側通行
Japan drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right. If you're used to right-hand traffic, take extra care at intersections and when merging. Allow time to adjust.
営業時間が限られています
Many car-rental offices close early, especially at smaller locations. Book pick-up times carefully and confirm after-hours return procedures.
燃料満タン返却が必要
You must return the car with a full tank and present the fuel receipt at return to avoid extra charges. Fill up at the last station before the airport.
ガソリンスタンドの営業
Gas stations may close on Sundays and holidays, especially in rural areas. Many are away from airport rental facilities. Plan refuelling in advance.
冬季運転装備
Winter tyres and snow equipment are standard from November to April. Confirm these are included in your rental. Consider 4WD for mountain roads and heavy snow.
