Airports
Two airports serve the Furano region. Choose based on your flight connections and travel preferences.
New Chitose Airport
Main international gateway to Hokkaido. Largest airport with most international and domestic flights. Well-connected with car-rental facilities.

Smaller regional airport, closer to Furano. Limited international flights but convenient domestic connections. Shorter drive to the villa.

Car Rental Tips
Important information for renting a car in Hokkaido. Read these tips carefully to avoid surprises.
International Driving Permit Required
Foreign visitors must hold a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home-country licence. Obtain the IDP before arriving in Japan — they cannot be issued locally.
Left-Hand Side Driving
Japan drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right. If you're used to right-hand traffic, take extra care at intersections and when merging. Allow time to adjust.
Limited Operating Hours
Many car-rental offices close early, especially at smaller locations. Book pick-up times carefully and confirm after-hours return procedures.
Fuel Refill Requirement
You must return the car with a full tank and present the fuel receipt at return to avoid extra charges. Fill up at the last station before the airport.
Gas Station Availability
Gas stations may close on Sundays and holidays, especially in rural areas. Many are away from airport rental facilities. Plan refuelling in advance.
Winter Driving Equipment
Winter tyres and snow equipment are standard from November to April. Confirm these are included in your rental. Consider 4WD for mountain roads and heavy snow.
